Key artwork: Whistler's Mother
Directed by David Bickerstaff
Whistler and the Art of Beauty explores the life and work of one of the most influential and unconventional artists of the 19th century. A contemporary of the Impressionists and admired by artists including Van Gogh and Manet, James McNeill Whistler challenged Victorian conventions in pursuit of "art for art's sake".
best known for the iconic Whistler's Mother, he revolutionised painting through his innovative use of colour, tone and composition, drawing inspiration from music in works he called Harmonies, Arrangements and Nocturnes.
Filmed alongside Tate Britain's major retrospective, this stunning Exhibition on Screen production brings together Whistler's greatest masterpieces and reveals the fascinating story of the artist behind them. A visually spectacular journey into the life and legacy of a true artistic pioneer.
“An artist is not paid for his labour but for his vision.” - James McNeill Whistler
