John Andersson (1960–2023) was a Swedish comic artist, painter and surrealist who lived most of his life on the ninth floor of a high-rise in the Stockholm suburb of Hagsätra. He was painting, drawing and making music on analog synths. John listened to his inner voice – sometimes many voices – and got his inspiration from sci-fi films, dreams and visions.
Cloud Hotel is the first collected edition of John Andersson’s comics in English. It contains three comic albums by John Andersson published in the early 90s – Gene, Fred & Judy (1992), Schneiderdushen / Bole Sole (1994) and Wig of Atlas (1994), as well as a selection of stand-alone stories in full color.
John Andersson passed away in 2023; he left on the Yellow Brick Road and forgot to leave the key to the secret back door. Friends and colleagues formed an association called John Andersson Vänner (Friends of John Andersson) to preserve and continue his artistic legacy. Cloud Hotel is published together with them and we hope that it will travel around the world, from Oz to the Ice Castle.
The exhibition at Kulturhuset Bergsjön celebrates the new book and shows original art from John’s early comics, as well as a brand new series of screen prints produced by Longest Night.
The opening will include a public discussion about John Andersson’s life and art with invited guests from the organisation John Anderssons Vänner – Niklas Nenzén, Mattias Forshage, Christofer Dahlby, Martin Halldin, Anna Ehrlemark m.fl.
Exclusively at the opening, Martin Halldin will play cassette tapes with original, never released, music by John Andersson.
The exhibition will be on view until January 10th, during the library’s regular opening hours.
