About this Event

Exploring Options for Managing Regulated and Emerging Contaminants in Sourcewaters

Several utilities around the country are exploring options for managing recently regulated contaminants (e.g., PFAS) and unregulated emerging contaminants (e.g., Cyanotoxins) in their sourcewaters and finding the best and most cost-effective solution for their reduction can be challenging.

PFAS are present in the influent of many WRFs due to their widespread use in manufacturing, commercial operations and household products. Although no PFAS limits have been identified federally for wastewater dischargers, the current focus of regulatory agencies has been placed on source identification within collection systems.

Bench-scale or pilot plant testing are critical steps for obtaining good data needed to design appropriate treatment strategies. This presentation will provide an overview of current regulations, source control, advanced treatment options (e.g., ozone-BAC, ion exchange, granular activated carbon, reverse osmosis, AOP), their merits and demerits and application. Case studies where utilities have explored the benefits and drawbacks of various source and treatment alternatives, assessed and weighed feasibility, conducted bench- and pilot-testing, developed life-cycle costs while implementing the best approach at full-scale will be presented.

About the Speaker

Dr. Chandra Mysore serves as Vice President and National OneWater Lead for CHA. He has extensive experience holding key positions in the private and public sectors developing innovative solutions to environmental challenges in drinking water, wastewater, water reuse and desalination. His experience encompasses planning, piloting, design, construction, startup and commissioning of small to large water/wastewater reclamation/reuse and desalination facilities incorporating conventional treatment or advanced water treatment processes, including ozone, ultraviolet, membranes, and advanced oxidation. As Technical Advisor, he has provided technical direction and senior-level review on several large projects around the globe addressing source water quality (e.g., PFAS, Cyanotoxins), treatment and finished water quality challenges in the distribution system. Dr. Mysore has served as a Technical Advisor or Principal Investigator for numerous bench, pilot and full-scale studies for treatment of key contaminants of concern and has evaluated the feasibility of emerging technologies.

He has participated in several WRF/EPA funded projects on water treatment and authored over 100 technical papers and several book chapters. Dr. Mysore is an active member in WRF and AWWA committees and served as a member of the National Research Advisory Council (RAC) of WRF; subject area: “High Quality Water” (2002 – 2005). Currently, he is a member of AWWA’s Water Reuse, National Reclaimed Water Standards Committee. He also serves as a trustee of AWWA’s Water Science and Research Division (2023-2026).
