Women throughout art history have been painted as dangerous, immoral, seductive, unstable and downright evil.
But why?
For this Halloween edition of Art Goss, we’re diving into the history of the “evil woman” archetype and asking why art history has spent so long convincing us that women are the villains.
Who were the real women behind these paintings? Who decided they were dangerous? And what do these images tell us about attitudes towards women, power, sexuality and morality?
Expect famous paintings, messy histories, questionable men, scandal, gossip and plenty of opinions as we explore the artists who created these images and the women they chose to portray.
About Art Goss
Art Goss is a fun, informal and accessible way to learn about art history.
We talk honestly, there are no silly questions, and we take the dryness out of traditional art history talks. If all of this is completely new to you, that’s absolutely fine — no prior knowledge is needed.
We believe art history is one of the best ways to learn about the world, humanity and just how messy the people behind some of history’s most famous artworks really were.
Art Goss is hosted by artist and curator Liv Askwith, whose work explores hyper-femininity and draws deeply from art history.
