Turner is one of our greatest painters, who revolutionised how artists deal with colour and light. In this four-week course, we will talk about the artist’s life, and how his style and technique developed. We will learn to juxtapose warm and cool hues to achieve the illusion of luminous skies and rich silhouettes. Working in oils and exploiting their slow-drying time, we will learn to softly blend colours, and then to layer the paint into sculptural, impasto textures.
We will be working from reproductions of paintings and photographs in the classroom. This course will be divided into two parts: the first three lessons will be an introduction to oil painting, working on canvas (all materials are provided for the students), while the fourth and final class will be a brief foray into watercolour; a medium favoured by Turner for capturing fleeting effects of light. This second part of the course will be taught by guest tutor Adam Smith, an accomplished, RCA-trained watercolour artist. The oil painting section will be taught as usual by Sam Gimson.
These classes are open to students of all abilities. A comfortable, sociable and encouraging atmosphere for anyone who wants to improve their artistic skills and summon forth their creativity.
All artist-quality materials are included in the price of the classes.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are also provided.
