Eva Illouz. The Responsibility of Intellectuals
This lecture treats guilt as a political affect which has emerged along with the culture of memory after World War II. It asks how it has become a key motif of progressivism and how we are to evaluate its effects and contribution to a politics of emancipation.
Eva Illouz (born 1961 in Fes, Morocco) is a French-Israeli sociologist widely recognized as one of the most prominent contemporary scholars in the sociology of emotions, culture, and capitalism. She studied sociology and communication at Paris-Nanterre University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and earned her Ph.D. at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania.
She is Directrice d'études at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris and Professor Emerita (former Rose Isaac Chair in Sociology) at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
