ESTAFET Edition 3: Redefining the filmmaker

For the third edition of ESTAFET, wysiwyg continues the conversation with "Redefining the filmmaker". For the many makers and artists that do not fit the traditional mould of making, distributing and presenting, it is essential that we look for a more broader definition what a "filmmaker" can be. For a city truly dedicated to film, it is essential that these different practices find a roof.
The event will consist of a keynote, panel talk, a screening and your participation in a roundtable session where we discuss specific themes. Expect an afternoon of inspiring ideas, thought-provoking questions by you and others, and encounters with a plurality of makers and film professionals.
Who is this for?
All makers, artists, autodidacts, amateurs, professionals, programmers, curators, policy makers and those that feel connected to art film.

Program
Inspirational session
We start with a presentation by online film magazine Talking Shorts on platforming short form moving-image and how they create a community through writing, events and talks.After this presentation Brussels-based film collective elephy joins for a panel talk to add their perspective as a platform for production and distribution of film and media art. Together, Talking Shorts and elephy willl look at who these different “filmmakers” are, what their works need and what is possible to support these practices.
After the panel talk, we will screen The Demand of Ordinary Devotion (2022) by Eva Giolo, a film picked by elephy that will inspire you to reflect on the process of making.
Roundtable sessions
We invite you to twice pick a theme that resonates with you and join the conversation. Each roundtable session (±30 minutes) offers space to ask questions, share experiences and give your perspective on theme and its questions. Each table will be hosted by a moderator that operates in the field of artist’ films. The five themes are:
1. Collaboration and Self-Production. How can collaborative and self-production models reshape the ways artists develop, produce, and sustain moving image work while challenging traditional hierarchies in filmmaking?
2. Reflection and Development. How do we create models and contexts for discussing work that is not finished yet?
3. Space and Place. Which physical and digital infrastructures are needed to support makers?
4. Programming and (Festival) Distribution. What is the scope for artist’ moving image work to be programmed at festivals and platforms?
5. Position and Vision What needs do process-driven filmmaking practices have and how can they be understood and met?
