About this Event
Unwrapping Myelin: How Our Nerves Are Protected, and How We Might Repair Them
In their Christmas Lecture, Professors Lyons and Williams will introduce myelin, the protective sheath that is wrapped around our nerve cables, which supports transmission of electrical impulses along nerves and ensures healthy nervous system function. They will describe their recent discoveries as to how myelin unwraps in disease, and how this can be stopped. From there, they will look ahead at how treatments that target myelin damage might protect against damage and promote repair in human diseases such as multiple sclerosis, dementias and ageing.
This lecture is free and open to everyone - please bring your family and friends along!
As ever, the lecture will be followed by a Q&A with the speakers and a mulled wine reception. Non-alcoholic hot drinks will also be available, and there will be a chance to explore exhibits of some scientific samples mentioned during the lecture, and to purchase recently published neuroscience books by other researchers within the Edinburgh Neuroscience community.
