The Ivy is delighted to be celebrating Ed Berlin and his new book, subtitled Artifacts from Late Industrial Baltimore (1950-1980).
Thoughtfully written and crafted so as to be a true art object, Baltimore Scrapbook sets out to better understand the nature of the Baltimore experience.
This narrative and collection of artifacts from the latter years of the 20th century provides glimpses of a unique culture, forged by a combination of commercial ingenuity and civic pride. It depicts a working city at the end of the industrial era and the beginning of a new chapter as a thriving multi-cultural community.
Think of it as a doorway to an essential chapter in Baltimore's history. And we can't wait to step through it. We hope you can join us.
Ed Berlin is a former executive at Citibank, Deutsche Bank and Thomson-Reuters. He is a collector of modernist design and artifacts from Baltimore’s industrial age. He is a graduate of Baltimore City College, UMBC and The University of Maryland Carey School of Law. Ed also has a master’s in international relations from New York University.
Ed and his wife, Ann Berlin owned and operated the Ivy Bookshop from 2012 to 2019. Ed has written a collector’s’ travelogue, a volume on graphic design, and co-edited City of Artists, Baltimore.
Ed and Ann live in Baltimore City with their granddaughter Isobel.
D. Watkins is the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of The Beast Side, The Cook Up, Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised, and We Speak for Ourselves—which was Enoch Pratt Free Library’s 2020 One Book Baltimore selection. His newest book, Black Boy Smile, was released in May. Watkins is Editor-at-Large for Salon. He is a writer on the HBO mini-series We Own This City and hosts the show’s companion podcast. Additionally, he was featured in the HBO documentary, The Slow Hustle. His work has been published in the New York Times, Esquire, New York Times Magazine, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, and other publications. Watkins is a college lecturer at the University of Baltimore, where he earned an MFA in Creative Writing. He also holds a Master of Education degree from Johns Hopkins University. Some of Watkins' awards include the Johns Hopkins Distinguished Alumnus Award, the BMe Genius Grant for Dynamic Black Leaders, the City Lit Dambach Award for Service to the Literary Arts, the Maryland Library Association’s William Wilson Maryland Author Award, and Ford’s Men of Courage Award for Black Male Storytellers. He was also a finalist for a 2016 Hurston Wright Legacy Award, and The Cook Up was a 2017 Books for a Better Life finalist. He lives in Baltimore, MD with his wife and daughter.
