Few Anglican traditions have endured as long — or as beautifully — as Choral Evensong, whose architecture of psalmody, canticles, and prayer has offered a daily rhythm of reflection at the close of day for more than five centuries.A short organ recital opens this afternoon's program before giving way to that candlelit tradition, as The Emmanuel Choir sings Kenneth Leighton's celebrated Second Service alongside James MacMillan's Padre Pio's Prayer — a work of aching simplicity drawn from the words of the beloved Italian mystic, and a perfect embodiment of what Evensong invites: to still the noise of the world and rest in something larger than ourselves.
