About this Event
How do you find your own voice when you have spent your life trying to live up to someone else’s expectations? Czech composer Jiří Trtík comes to Bohemian National Hall for a solo concert featuring his recent work and music from his opera Kafka’s Letter to His Father.
Based on Franz Kafka’s letter to his father, the opera revisits a childhood shaped by fear and a son’s struggle with his father’s demands. Kafka finds a measure of freedom through writing. The opera premiered at Prague’s National Theatre in 2024 and will receive its U.S. premiere at CAP UCLA in November 2026.
At Echoes of Kafka, Trtík will perform piano and synthesizer arrangements of several passages from the opera, alongside other recent compositions. It is a chance to hear his music up close, where acoustic sounds meet electronics and unexpected textures.
Jiří Trtík is a Czech composer and the founder and artistic director of STRO.MY Ensemble. He has written music for the National Theatre in Prague, Kremerata Baltica, the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava, and performers and ensembles in the United States. In 2021, he received an OSA Award for his success as a composer of classical music abroad. With STRO.MY Ensemble, he presents performances in unconventional spaces, often bringing music together with visual and theatrical elements.
