Junior Community ScientistsEver wondered what it’s like to participate in community science projects? Join Communities for a Healthy Bay for a hands-on half-day adventure exploring Commencement Bay from the water and the shore!
Youth will depart from the CHB office aboard our boat for a bay patrol, stopping along the way to conduct real water quality testing and help record water color data for ongoing monitoring efforts. Next, they’ll get up close with the bay’s smallest residents during a plankton sampling session, using nets and microscopes to see what’s living beneath the surface.
The adventure continues at Owen Beach, where kids will join in a Green Crab Molt Search — helping track this invasive species by combing the shoreline for shed crab shells — before refueling with a provided lunch by the water. Then it’s back aboard for the cruise home to the CHB office.
Kids will leave with real hands-on science experience, a better understanding of the bay they call home, and a taste of what it means to protect it.
This program is FREE! Lunch is provided.
