📚🍴 What did people eat, drink, and use for medicine in the 18th-century Maritimes? And what can their recipes tell us about life in the early modern Atlantic world?Join us for the second presentation of the YSHS Speaker Series this fall on October 15 at 7:00 p.m. with Dr. Edith Snook, Professor and Chair of the Department of English at the University of New Brunswick.
Dr. Snook will explore fascinating recipes found in archives from the 18th-century Maritimes – recipes for food and drinks, human and animal medicines, and even household and agricultural products. Some are practical, some are surprising, and some are downright strange!
Her talk draws on her forthcoming book, Early Modern Maritime Recipes: Circulating Knowledge in the Early Modern Atlantic World, co-authored with Dr. Lyn Bennett (Dalhousie).
Come discover the unexpected ways knowledge was shared and used in the Maritimes more than 200 years ago – and perhaps leave with a new appreciation for some of the more unusual recipes of the past!
This event is open to the public – everyone is welcome! We hope to see you there!
