Drinking in History: Section 106 at a Crossroads

One of the nation’s most important historic preservation tools could soon look very different.
Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act requires federal agencies to consider how federally supported projects may affect historic places—and creates opportunities for Tribal Nations, preservation professionals, local communities, and the public to have a voice in that process. This summer, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation advanced significant proposed revisions to the regulations that govern Section 106, changes that will greatly diminish those voices. Those proposals are now moving through the federal rulemaking process.
Join us as Rethos Deputy Director Erin Hanafin Berg discusses what Section 106 does, what is being proposed, and what these changes could mean for historic places and communities in Minnesota and across the country. We’ll also talk about where the process stands now, what happens next, and how members of the public can make their voices heard as opportunities for engagement arise.
This is an important moment for historic preservation. Come grab a drink, get informed, and learn how to participate in the decisions shaping the future of Section 106.
