Together and apart, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers are iconic singers who transcended the country genre to find mass popularity in the 1970s, 80s and beyond. Dr. Mike Daley Presents: The Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers Story is a concert and talk celebrating their lives and music, featuring renowned music historian Dr. Mike Daley on guitar and vocals, Loralee McGuirl on vocals and guitar, Suba Sankaran on vocals and percussion, Mike Ferfolia on bass and vocals, and Jill Daley on piano and violin.
You'll learn about Dolly's impoverished Tennessee childhood, her rise to fame singing with Porter Wagoner, and her brilliant and innovative solo career, with hits like "Jolene", "I Will Always Love You" and "9 to 5". We'll also cover Kenny Rogers' early career with the First Edition and his breakthrough as a solo singer with radio blockbusters like "The Gambler," "Lucille" and "Lady". Of course, Dolly and Kenny famously duetted to great success, including with the 1983 hit "Islands in the Stream". The latest in a monthly series that has included sold-out lecture-concerts on the Beatles, Billy Joel, Gordon Lightfoot, Tina Turner and the Beach Boys, Dr. Mike Daley Presents: The Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers Story is a must-see for any music fan.
Dr. Mike Daley is a musician, musicologist and author known across the GTA for his lectures and performances. Loralee McGuirl, making her Dr. Mike Daley Presents debut, is an outstanding and versatile singer who specializes in Dolly Parton's music. Suba Sankaran (The ABBA Story, The Fleetwood Mac Story) is a Dora Award-winning singer and composer who has performed around the world. Mike Ferfolia (The Stevie Wonder Story, The Beach Boys Story) is a sought-after bassist and vocalist. Jill Daley (all shows) is manager of musicians at Canada's National Ballet School and Musician-In-Residence at Church of the Redeemer.
Church of the Redeemer is a spacious and comfortable (cushioned chairs, not pews) 1879 church with excellent sightlines and acoustics. It is conveniently located in Yorkville, close to Bay and Museum subway stations, ample parking and fine restaurants.
General admission tickets are $38.00 plus HST and processing fee. These events usually sell out, but if tickets are available at the door, they will be $50.00, cash only. Ticket holders will check in at the door - there is no need to bring a paper or digital ticket.
