7 p.m.: I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (Jacques Tourneur, 1943, 35mm, 69 mins)New print! A young nurse arrives on a Caribbean plantation to care for the mysteriously catatonic wife of a wealthy sugar planter, and finds herself entangled by family secrets, colonial history, and whispers of the supernatural. With a score by Roy Webb and songs from calypso singer Sir Lancelot, this haunting reimagining of JANE EYRE glides between folklore, psychological drama, and gothic horror, giving us one of cinema’s most atmospheric and unsettling masterpieces. “A poetic gem” (J. Hoberman) with “caressingly evocative direction” (Tom Milne). 35mm print from the Yale Film Archive, made with thanks to BFI.
The "Treasures from the Yale Film Archive" series is presented with support from Paul L. Joskow ‘70 M.Phil., ‘72 Ph.D.
8:30 p.m.: BLACK ZOMBIE (Maya Annik Bedward, 2026, DCP, 90 mins)
Forget everything Hollywood taught you about zombies. Bedward’s new documentary digs beneath the pop-culture clichés to uncover a far older and more complicated story, one rooted in colonialism, enslavement, spirituality, and survival. With clips from WHITE ZOMBIE to THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW and beyond, BLACK ZOMBIE peels away decades of cinematic mythology to map the zombie's Caribbean origins and make the case for a cultural reckoning . “You’ll never see a zombie the same way again” (Jessi Cape).
The "Cinemix" series features stand-alone screenings of standout films, presented by the Yale Film Archive and our colleagues from across campus and beyond.
