What lies beyond the last surveyed line? And can two cave systems, separated on the surface, actually be connected deep beneath the Slovenian karst? In the summer of 2026, nine cave divers from Slovenia, Belgium, Germany and France came together for an ambitious expedition to Križna Jama and Nova Križna Jama in Slovenia.
Their goal was not simply to dive deeper. The team combined cave diving, exploration, surveying, photography, video, photogrammetry, biology and hydrology to better understand one of Slovenia's most remarkable cave systems — and to investigate a connection that has intrigued explorers for decades.
The result is Two Caves, a 43-minute documentary, directed by Nick Derutter, taking you beneath the surface and into the reality of a modern cave exploration expedition: the preparation, the logistics, the discoveries, the scientific work, the challenges — and the decisions that have to be made when exploration reaches its limits.
During the expedition, the team explored beyond the previously known limits of Nova Križna Jama, reaching 153 metres of depth. New passages and a previously unknown chamber were discovered in Križna Jama, while survey and water sampling provided new clues about how the underground system works.
But the biggest question remains unanswered: are the two caves physically connected?
🎥 Come and discover the story behind the exploration, and meet members of the expedition team during a 30-minute Q&A after the screening.
