Happy birthday to trumpeter and bandleader John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie, born October 21, 1917! Twelve year old Gillespie taught himself how to play the trombone and trumpet after he heard Roy Eldridge on the radio. He started out in Cab Calloway's band where he started composing, and later played with Ella Fitzgerald's and Earl Hines' orchestras. From the 1940s he was a leading figure in the development of bebop, a jazz educator, and helped bring Afro-Cuban elements into jazz music.
In 1964 he ran for president as a write-in candidate. Gillespie promised that if he were elected, the White House would be renamed the Blues House, and he would have a cabinet composed of Duke Ellington (Secretary of State), Miles Davis (Director of the CIA), Max Roach (Secretary of Defense), Charles Mingus (Secretary of Peace), Ray Charles (Librarian of Congress), Louis Armstrong (Secretary of Agriculture), Mary Lou Williams (Ambassador to the Vatican), Thelonious Monk (Travelling Ambassador) and Malcolm X (Attorney General).
