About this Event
Psychosis, characterised by abnormal perceptions and beliefs about the world around us is not equally distributed in the population. Variation in risk has been documented for almost 150 years, yet until recently psychosis was understood to have a predominantly biological, even genetic basis. But what if the environmental cues that people with psychosis were misinterpreting in the world around them were the very same factors that also determined who was more likely to develop psychosis in the first place? In my inaugural professorial lecture, I reveal how we have witnessed a renaissance in interest, understanding and discovery of the social determinants of psychosis in the quarter of a century since the turn of the millennium. I’ll demonstrate how these insights are generating new paradigms for reducing social inequities in who gets psychosis, and how we can take a population-based approach to prevent serious mental illnesses and their pernicious effects on individuals, families and society.
This is a hybrid event at Kennedy Lecture Theatre (ground floor of the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH) Main Building) 30 Guilford Street & online via Zoom. A drinks reception will follow after the lecture at the Balcony (30 Guilford Street) in UCL GOSICH.
