DIVAN AUSTRALIS: HORIZONSMaster musicians from across the globe come together for a single night at Federation Square, weaving the deep traditions of Anatolia, China, Japan, First Nations Australia and Western symphonic music into one shared performance.
Presented by Australian Turkish Melodies of Peace and performed by the Divan Australis Orchestra under the baton of composer and bağlama virtuoso İskender Ozan Toprak, Horizons brings traditional instruments and a full symphonic orchestra into the same musical story.
On stage:
Çimen Yalçın, a Türk halk müziği vocalist whose powerful voice and multilingual repertoire carry the rich heritage of Anatolia's many regions.
Halil Çokyürekli, the world-renowned zurna master who takes the instrument far beyond its traditional borders, blending it with jazz and other styles.
Uncle Ian Hunter, a respected Wurundjeri elder and didgeridoo player who brings Australia's ancient tradition of music and storytelling to the stage.
Lei Zhou, a master of the pipa, carrying more than two thousand years of Chinese musical tradition into the present.
Brandon Lee, a koto artist trained in Tokyo alongside the celebrated Kazue Sawai, bringing 1,300 years of classical Japanese koto into contemporary, cross-cultural work.
Sinem Bolat, a Türk halk müziği artist known for a repertoire running from Âşık Veysel to Âşık Mahzuni Şerif, bringing the Anatolian minstrel tradition to Melbourne.
Melda Ceylanbaş and Harley Efron, a striking vocal duo moving from musical theatre and jazz to R&B, pop and soul, united by a love of storytelling through song.
From the melodies of Anatolia and the bağlama tradition to the strong voice of the Aegean zurna, from the Chinese pipa to the delicate tones of the Japanese koto, from the ancient sound of the didgeridoo to the polyphony of the Western symphony, Horizons gathers these traditions into one original musical narrative.
