La Mattina presents an evening celebrating the music of Henry Purcell, including a semi-staged performance of his much-loved opera Dido and Aeneas, performed by candlelight.Telling the story of the doomed love between the Queen of Carthage and the Trojan hero Aeneas, Dido and Aeneas brings together lively choruses and some of Purcell’s most heart-breakingly beautiful music – including Dido’s famous final lament.
The programme further explores these twin aspects of Purcell’s remarkable body of work. Alongside the solemn beauty of his Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary, we’ll hear some of his lighter-hearted vocal pieces, showcasing the wit and variety of one of England’s greatest composers.
We will be accompanied by players from professional baroque orchestra Ensemble La Notte, who specialise in historically informed performance of Seventeenth- and early Eighteenth-Century repertoire.
