About this Event

The next event in the series Deep Dive, which explores the work of popular artists who have shaped our musical imagination, focuses on the multidisciplinary Solange Knowles. On the 10th anniversary of Solange’s A Seat at the Table — an album that redefined contemporary R&B through its intimate reflections on Black womanhood, healing, family, memory, and self-determination — we present a discussion and reflection on key tracks from her catalog.
Gloria Kaba, an acclaimed audio engineer and producer who has worked with Solange, joins with Emily Lordi and Salamishah Tillet, two of the most insightful voices writing and thinking about Black culture today, to help us understand Solange’s artistic and cultural impact. Kaba’s work spans recording, mixing, and songwriting with artists including Beyoncé, Madonna, Yebba, Q-Tip, and A Tribe Called Quest; she teaches at Berklee NYC. Lordi is a professor at Vanderbilt University and author of Holding Lightening, a new biography of Whitney Houston; Tillet is a professor at Rutgers University and a Pulitzer Prize-winning critic-at-large for The New York Times.
Presented with H. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music. Made possible with support from the Elebash Global Voices Fund.
