Data Centres: Hidden in Plain Sight (UNE Sydney Public Talk #2, Hybrid)

Data centres power almost everything we do online, yet few of us know what they are, where they go or what they need to run. Join us in person or online for a cross-sector conversation bringing together planning, technology law and cyber security experts to demystify the infrastructure behind our digital lives. With tens of billions of dollars in data centre projects in the NSW pipeline and Greater Sydney emerging as a major hub, this conversation comes at a critical moment for deciding how — and where — that growth happens.

Two keynote presentations will set the scene, before a panel discussion explores how surging demand for cloud and AI intersects with energy, water, land use, regulation and security, and what it will take to make the data centre boom work for the communities that host it. Expect honest insights and fresh ideas — and, if you're joining in person, a catered networking reception to connect with people shaping Australia's digital infrastructure.

Whether you're a planner, policymaker, lawyer, technology or infrastructure professional, student or simply curious about what powers the cloud, this session offers a space to learn, share and contribute.
