About this Event

Join the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for a free tour of Newark Upon Trent Cemetery Cemetery, led by one of our experienced volunteer tour guides.

Our tours are free to the public, but if you would like to support us then please consider donating to our charity The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF).

https://foundation.cwgc.org/donate/

MEETING POINT is at the Cross of Sacrifice.

Newark Cemetery was constructed in 1856 both as a final resting place for the dead and as a park for the people of the town. The granite war memorial at the entrance to the park commemorates hundreds of Newark’s residents who died in the First World War and later conflicts. The CWGC cares for the graves of 49 servicemen of the First World War scattered throughout the cemetery. When the Second World War broke out, the cemetery set aside space for RAF burials, and this became the large war graves plot we maintain here today. It holds all but ten of some 90 Commonwealth and almost 400 Polish graves dating from the Second World War.

The tour lasts approx. 60 mins and covers about 1500 metres on paths and grass with uneven ground. There is wheelchair access.

There is limited parking at the main entrance on London Road or on street parking at the southern end of the cemetery by the Sports Club (please do not use their car park) What3words toolkit.stooping.crackles.

There are no toilets on site. Please bring water if required.

Please come dressed for the weather and in a suitable footwear.

Well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome.

Please note there can be last minute cancellations. This can be due to various reasons including illness, site issues and weather. We will email you as soon as we can, but this could include the morning of the tour, so please check your emails prior to leaving for the tour.

The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to actively engage all communities with the work of the CWGC by telling the inspiring stories through education and outreach projects.

The CWGF is an independent charity registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (1171947) and Scotland (SC051982).
