Cult Movie Mondays: Submarine (2010)📅 Monday, November 16th | 🕗 8:00 PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
Swansea, 1986. Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) is fifteen, wears a duffel coat, and has two goals: lose his virginity before his next birthday, and stop his mother (Sally Hawkins) running off with the new-age guru next door (Paddy Considine), who happens to be her old flame. He works on both with psychology books lifted from his parents' bedroom, while chasing Jordana (Yasmin Paige), a classmate who likes setting fire to things and has no patience for romance. Meanwhile his marine biologist dad (Noah Taylor) quietly sinks.
This was Richard Ayoade's debut as writer-director, a long way from playing Moss in The IT Crowd, and it earned him a BAFTA nomination. Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys wrote the songs, his first solo release. Every detail is worked out: each character has their own colour in their clothes and belongings, and red creeps into Oliver's world as he falls for Jordana. It's the kind of film people watch once and then quote to each other for years.
"A spirited and warm film debut."
– Time Out
"A tremendous new voice in British film."
– Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
