Broken Hearts Club: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)📅 Wednesday, November 18th | 🕗 8:00 PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
After a bad break-up, Joel (Jim Carrey) finds out his ex, Clementine (Kate Winslet), has paid a clinic called Lacuna to wipe him from her memory. So he books the same procedure. Most of the film happens inside Joel's head that night as the technicians erase her memory by memory, and halfway through he realises he wants to keep her. He spends the rest of the night trying to hide her in corners of his mind where she doesn't belong.
Charlie Kaufman's script won the Oscar, and Michel Gondry shot most of the dream logic in-camera, with collapsing houses, vanishing faces and a beach house falling into the sea. Carrey plays it completely straight, which is why it hurts, and Winslet earned an Oscar nomination as Clementine. Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood are the clinic staff, having a messy night of their own. If you've ever wished you could forget someone, this is the film.
"Watching Eternal Sunshine, you don't just watch a love story – you fall in love with what love really is."
– Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
"Audacious, thought-provoking and ruefully funny."
– Lou Lumenick, New York Post
