Cult Movie Mondays: After Hours (1985)📅 Monday, November 23rd | 🕗 8:00 PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) is an uptown Manhattan word processor who meets Marcy (Rosanna Arquette) in a coffee shop and takes a late-night cab down to SoHo to see her. His only $20 bill flies out the window on the way, and that's the best thing that happens to him all night. By the small hours the subway fare has gone up, he can't get home, and a neighbourhood mob, partly organised from an ice cream van, has decided he's the burglar who's been robbing the block.
Scorsese made it in a hurry after The Last Temptation of Christ collapsed on him, going back to shooting fast and cheap on New York streets. It won him Best Director at Cannes, plus Best Feature and Best Director at the first Independent Spirit Awards. Tim Burton was originally lined up to direct and stepped aside when Scorsese wanted it. It's the closest Scorsese has come to a straight comedy, a nightmare played for laughs, with Teri Garr, Catherine O'Hara, Linda Fiorentino and Cheech & Chong turning up along the way.
"Rarely has a visit to the underworld been so entertaining."
– David Sterritt, Cineaste
"One of Scorsese's 'smallest' but most accomplished films."
– Emanuel Levy
