A trucker in a cowboy hat, Goro (Tsutomu Yamazaki), pulls into a run-down roadside noodle shop with his sidekick Gun (a very young Ken Watanabe). The ramen is terrible. The owner, a widow called Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto), begs him to teach her how to make it properly, and Goro rounds up a gang of experts to help: a rich old man's chauffeur, a noodle master, and a crew of homeless gourmets who cook like Michelin chefs.
Juzo Itami built it as a "noodle western", lifting its plot straight from Shane, then kept wandering off it. The film keeps cutting away to strangers and their food: a gangster in a white suit (Koji Yakusho) and his lover playing with raw egg yolks, an etiquette class for slurping spaghetti, a dying mother getting up to cook one last dinner. It's one of the great films about food, and about why we care so much about it. Come hungry.
"Perhaps the funniest movie about the connection between food and sex ever made."
– The Washington Post
"A self-assured gem constructed like the bowl of classic ramen the characters strive to cook."
– The Guardian
