How does a small island nation exert influence far beyond its borders — and help other authoritarian governments maintain power?
Senate Square Society welcomes John Suarez, Executive Director of the Center for a Free Cuba, for a discussion of Havana’s relationships with Russia, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Suarez will examine the role of intelligence cooperation, security assistance, propaganda, and diplomatic backing in sustaining these partnerships, exploring what Cuba contributes and what it receives in return.
The discussion comes as U.S. prosecutors have charged Russian, Cuban, and Venezuelan nationals in an alleged Russian intelligence network involving surveillance and assassination plots, including a plan targeting a Russian dissident believed to be in Washington. Against this backdrop, Suarez will explore the reach of authoritarian cooperation, its consequences for democratic movements and exiled dissidents, and the choices facing U.S. policymakers.
