Join our education coordinator, Anne Lutz for a unique evening paddling experience as we explore Cross Lake beneath the glow of the November Supermoon weekend. Participants will launch from Richard Fleming Park and paddle through Fordney Bayou onto Cross Lake while experiencing the transition from daylight to moonlight in one of Caddo Parish’s most scenic natural settings.
The program will begin at 5:00 PM with check-in, a brief safety overview, and launch preparation. Participants will then embark on a leisurely paddle through Fordney Bayou and onto Cross Lake, allowing time to enjoy the changing colors of sunset, observe evening wildlife activity, and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the lake after dark.
*We have limited number of canoes to loan - no riders under the age of 6 may ride in the loaned canoes. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
You may bring your own canoe or kayak to participate.
Canoes are first come first served. You will be contacted to confirm you have a boat reserved.
This guided interpretive paddle will highlight the natural and cultural history of the Cross Lake area, including the importance of waterways to the Caddo people and the deep connection between people, wildlife, and the landscape. Participants will learn about the ecology of Cross Lake, including aquatic habitats, cypress forests, and the nocturnal animals that become active after sunset.
Interpretive discussions will include the significance of the November Beaver Moon, traditional seasonal moon naming practices, and how people throughout history have used the moon as a natural calendar to understand changing seasons and environmental patterns. Participants will also learn about lunar phases, what makes a supermoon unique, and how the moon influences Earth’s natural systems.
As darkness settles, participants will have the opportunity to pause on the water for nighttime observation, including listening for nocturnal wildlife, viewing moon reflections across Cross Lake, and experiencing the natural world from a new perspective.
