Join Claire Sullivan and Rachel Edwards as they discuss Claire's new book Criminally Bad: The 100% true story of Tasmania’s most inept crime ring.
Dubious ninja training. A scam religion. Swords, guns and homemade bombs. Extortion gone wrong. All cooked up in a cosy lounge room over a nice cuppa in Australia's least-likely-to-succeed capital, Hobart.
Criminally Bad is journalist and comedian Claire Sullivan's deep dive into the jaw-dropping true story of a cult-ish ninja crime gang that self-imploded in 1990s Tassie.
Drawing on old evidence and intrepid new research, Claire takes us on a fascinating, darkly funny ride through power, friendship, free will, toxic masculinity and almost unimaginable ineptitude. It won't surprise you that not everyone gets out alive.
Completely true and utterly bonkers, Criminally Bad uncovers an until-now buried batshit slice of Australian true crime history.
Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction.
Strap in.
Claire Sullivan is an award-winning comedian and writer who was a regular contributor for VICE and has been published in Astray, The Big Issue, K*ll Your Darlings, The Music, Cordite Poetry Review, Hobart Pulp (USA), The Lifted Brow and plenty more. Sullivan grew up in Nipaluna/Hobart and now lives in Naarm/Melbourne with her cat named Chicken.
Rachel Edwards produces events for the State Library and Archives of Tasmania. She is a former senior producer for ABC Radio Hobart, and Editor in Chief for Transportation Press, which published Tasmanian stories in an international context. Her work evolves around the facilitation of stories, creation of audio, and her writing has been published both in Australia and internationally. At the heart of it all, she celebrates story, literature and is working hard to elevate the recently recognised UNESCO City of Literature of Nipaluna Hobart.
