Cinderella yearns for her Prince Charming, Mozart’s concerto has a tinge of nostalgic sadness, and Brahms’ pastoral symphony builds on Beethoven’s inheritance. Stories of Love and Legacy.
Rossini’s typically lively La Cenerentola overture includes the famous long “Rossini crescendo” and a happy ending to the Cinderella story. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.21 projects a calm, untroubled mood. At its heart the long, exquisitely beautiful slow movement unfolds, making this one of the composer’s finest works. Brahms’ Symphony No.2 is serene in character in the inner movements, but with much drama and tension in the first movement and blazing joie de vivre in the magnificent final movement in which the brass make their mark in a triumphant coda.
