About this Event

Join us at a special program for kids and their families at Shifting Grounds: New Jewish Art Festival. Inspired by the Jewish tradition of singing out in our own voices, we will hand-build our very own percussion instruments using recycled objects, and then use them to jam out together. This program is best suited for ages 5-8, and is intended to be experienced by children together with their grown-ups.

Eli Berman is a performer, composer, and experimental instrument builder who creates sound objects for the voice. She will lead children and their caregivers in constructing shakers, drums, kazoos, and other sound objects out of paper towel rolls, wax paper, beads, and more. We will learn songs to play together while we drum with and sing inside of our new instruments. You’re encouraged to bring any containers, jugs, jars, or cardboard tubes, to serve as vessels, and anything small that makes noise like dried rice or beans, beads, etc that you no longer need!

SUPPORT

Shifting Grounds: New Jewish Art Festival is presented by The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life. The Neighborhood gathers people together for inventive and unexpected Jewish arts, culture, and spirituality, bringing together Brooklyn energy with Jewish experience to spark meaning and joy. A project of Asylum Arts at The Neighborhood, Artist Working Groups bring together Jewish artists from across Brooklyn for professional development, collaboration, and creative feedback through a multidisciplinary retreat and discipline-specific cohorts.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.
