The United States systematically keeps people impacted by the criminal legal system out of the democratic process by restricting the voting rights of millions of formerly disenfranchised people. But in Minnesota, you can vote if you are living in the community.
Come for:
-workshops + resource booths
-Democracy Play performance by Mixed Blood
-free lunch
-understand your voting rights + make a plan to vote
-get ready to participate in our democracy and have a voice in things that impact your day-to-day life!
More background:
In 2024, 4 million Americans could not vote due to felony convictions. Disenfranchisement also disproportionately affects communities of color—in 2022, 21 percent of Minnesota's disenfranchised population was Black (despite being only 7% of the state’s population).
In 2023, the state restored voting rights to about 47,000 Minnesotans who had completed their time in jail or prison. In Minnesota, if you're out, you can vote! Yet still, many of these eligible voters don’t participate due to confusion about their rights or fear of prosecution.
