Construction products following the Grenfell Tower Inquiry - Manchester

This course lays an excellent foundation and framework for all those making, selling and specifying construction products.
About this Event

Construction product decisions used to be made by balancing three things: design intent, commercial viability, and manufacturability. The post-Grenfell regime (Building Safety Act 2022, revised Construction Products Regulations, Fire Safety Act) exposed that regulatory compliance had been treated as a fourth consideration — something to satisfy at the end rather than a constraint that shapes the other three from the start.

This three-day course explains, in simple terms, the key ingredients that need to be managed and what good looks like. It's aimed at all key roles within a construction product manufacturer, because this is a team effort, not the sole responsibility of the product designer — everyone needs a good understanding of what other parts of the business are doing, and why.

This interactive course works on two levels simultaneously: a refresher/audit for specialists and a foundational map for everyone else, without either group feeling like it's the wrong session for them. Modules covered include:

  • Regulatory & Policy Landscape
  • Design & Information Responsibilities
  • Developing the Product
  • Testing & Evidence
  • Managing the Product Through Life

Day 1 covers what's required, focusing on new requirements relevant to everyone — performance claims, instructions and technical support.

Days 2 and 3 return to the start of the product design process, working through key stages with particular attention to testing and certification.

This is not just a construction-site issue but a product-development-and-beyond, issue.

This three-day course is delivered in partnership with the Structural Timber Association by speaker Rupert Scott, and is offered in three venues: Manchester, Cardiff and London.

In Manchester, the three-day course will run on each of:

  • Thursday 14 January 2027
  • Thursday 21 January 2027
  • Thursday 28 January 2027

at the following times:

9:00 for 9:30 start with 16:30 finish.

Speaker Rupert Scott has worked in the construction industry for over 35 years, including roles responsible for product development, quality management, production management, sales and marketing, association management, surveying and upgrading of fire safety in historic buildings.

He has spent a large part of his career involved in fire testing and product certification working for both a product manufacturer and a test / certification body. For 12 years he was the general and marketing manager of the Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA).

Since 2021 his work has been focused on the implications of the Grenfell Tower Fire Inquiry for both the fire test / certification and construction product sectors. He is currently a director and the general secretary of the FTSG, a trade body representing UK fire test and certification bodies.

He has invented, patented and brought to the market a cookware product. He also designs and makes steam bent timber lamps, which are sold through retailers.

This new training programme draws heavily on his varied career experience and seeks to help construction product manufacturers and others meet the increased expectations and new regulatory requirements placed upon them following the Grenfell Tower fire, whilst remaining commercially viable.
