🪘 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM — FREE Open Rumba (Open and free for everyone)
Mark your calendars — this Sunday we continue building Detroit’s Afro-Cuban rumba community and living the culture through dance, rhythm, and song.
➡️ Danny will lead an intro to rumba percussion class exploring technique, rhythm, and the essential role of percussion within Afro-Cuban rumba traditions.
➡️ Duane Wrenn will lead a rumba dance class exploring movement, rhythm, and connection within Afro-Cuban rumba tradition.
➡️ Following the classes, we'll kick off the community rumba featuring live singing, drumming, dancing, and participation from everyone present.
No experience is necessary. To help everyone participate, Danny Gonzalez will start the rumba by teaching a traditional rumba song and guiding the group through the call-and-response singing that forms the foundation of rumba in Cuba. By the time the drums begin, everyone will have a role in the open rumba.
This is an opportunity to learn, listen, move, and experience the tradition in community.
➡️ This is not a drum circle. After class, put your drums AWAY.
All are welcome! We encourage you to dance, sing, drum, and listen.
We’re hosting an open rumba to celebrate Afro-Cuban music and tradition through rhythm, song, and movement.
