The ocean has always been a source of awe and wonder. So it was in Gloucester Harbor in the 1800s, when villagers were said to have witnessed a sea serpent rising from the tide—an encounter that became one of Cape Ann’s enduring maritime legends.
For centuries, Dogtown’s rugged terrain has inspired eerie tales. The 18th-century village was once home to farmers, war wives, widows of seafaring men, and their roaming watchdogs. Long abandoned, the five-square-mile settlement straddling Gloucester and Rockport is now marked by cellar holes, etched boulders, even a whale’s jaw – and bewitching legends.
COLD COAST follows the shoreline’s intersection of history, crime, loss, and lore. This is not a horror-story hour, but a victim-centered evening of storytelling, research, remembrance, and local history – honoring the people at the heart of every case while exploring the mysteries that continue to shape our region.
Among the crime cases to explore are the disappearance of Abbie Flynn; the identification of Tiffany Bradley, who for decades was known only as Chelsea Jane Doe; the murder of Beverly teacher Anne Natti, whose body was found in Dogtown; the unsolved circumstances surrounding Frances Cochran, found near the Salem–Swampscott line; and two anonymous phone calls that identified the locations of Cochran and another victim.
