As an ex-mining village, we are so proud to be hosting this powerful new musical drama right here in our community."Coal Faces" is a gripping, verbatim-based musical drama set in an abandoned pit village in County Durham spanning the 1970s–1980s. Written and directed by local-born Andrew Golightly, with original music by Jo Collins (co-founder of the internationally acclaimed Chickenshed Theatre Company) and funded by Arts Council England, this is a story that needs to be told.
It explores the real, untold stories of generations living through the aftermath of the pit closures—facing domestic violence, alcoholism, and prejudice, but driven by the resilience, laughter, and sheer bloody-mindedness that got people through. Early audiences have described it as genuinely moving.
