Level up your Historical Fencing coaching skills with this clinic offered by the Classical Academy of Arms. This clinic will introduce or boost coaching skills in single-handed and two-handed weapons styles. The sessions will revolve around major themes: Footwork, Defense, Offense and Counter-Offense. Clinic instructors will demonstrate building these simple themes into full lessons, using multiple tempos, distances and tactical options, focusing on effective teaching methods and skill development. Regardless of your specific historical weapon style or school, you will find these teaching skills useful.
Rather than focusing on sword techniques from a given school, the clinic will focus on the coaching themes and the methods of effectively teaching them in the framework of your particular school or style. Attendees will practice teaching single students and groups. The coaching skills learned will be useful regardless of competitive sport rules or historical recreation environment.
The Classical Academy of Arms is an organization dedicated to teaching instructors in classical and historic fencing/fighting schools. The CAA is accredited through the National Committee for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE), and the clinic instructors are experienced historical weapon combatants, coaches and instructors of coaches. Please refer to the CAA website for more information.
Clinic attendees will select single-handed or two-handed for their primary area of study. Most of the sessions will begin with the full group and break into smaller groups for practical exercises. See below for examples of the weapons styles.
Sunday afternoon will be dedicated to certification & practical exams for Demonstrator, Assistant Instructor and Instructor. See section below for more info.
Attendees who attend the full clinic will be credited with 10 hours of Instruction/Clinic hours, which assist in the qualification towards CAA certifications.
