Cleantech at a Crossroads: Navigating Funding Constraints, Regulatory Shifts and Strategic Pivots
Presenter: Dr. Darrell N. Burrell, associate ethics fellow, Marymount University
The cleantech sector in 2026 finds itself at a pivotal moment. After a decade of rapid growth fueled by strong policy support, public-private partnerships, and venture capital inflows, the landscape is shifting dramatically. Funding cuts across key markets, alongside tightening government regulations, policy reversals and geopolitical pressures, created a more complex and uncertain operating environment for sustainable businesses.
This presentation explores the current state of cleantech through the lens of these evolving challenges. Participants will examine how reduced subsidies, delayed infrastructure investments and shifting political priorities have disrupted capital flows and slowed deployment timelines across renewable energy, circular economy solutions, sustainable mobility, and climate tech innovation. At the same time, increasing regulatory scrutiny and fragmented global standards have raised compliance costs and operational risks for many firms.
Despite these headwinds, the sector is far from stagnant. Forward-thinking cleantech companies are actively adapting, pivoting business models, diversifying revenue streams and leveraging new partnerships to remain competitive and resilient. This session will highlight how organizations are responding by:
· Repositioning value propositions to align with cost savings, resilience, and energy security, not just sustainability.
· Tapping alternative financing mechanisms, including blended finance, corporate partnerships, and project-based funding.
· Expanding into new markets where policy support and demand signals are stronger.
· Advocating for policy clarity and engaging in regulatory co-creation.
· Accelerating innovation cycles to meet changing customer and investor expectations.
