The Syracuse Poster Project will launch a Character Development Meetup, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15 in the café at Parthenon Bookstore, 333 S. Salina St.The meetup welcomes artists, writers, and storytellers for an evening of learning and socializing related to the development of fictional characters, including mascots, superheroes, comic and cartoon characters, and graphic novel characters.
The inaugural meetup will be led by David Hicock, artist and co-founder of Animotion Inc., the long-standing Syracuse animation studio.
Participants will discuss characters they’ve developed, or would like to develop, and offer one another support. The Poster Project will present its mascot, Paige, and engage participants in the development of Paige’s storyline.
Bring basic drawing supplies, examples of your favorite fictional characters (comics, cartoons, manga), and an eagerness to invent.
Meetups will continue, 6 to 7:30 p.m., third Thursdays of the month, at Parthenon. The first meetup is free, with future meetups calling for a modest fee.
The Poster Project, founded in 2001, is a nonprofit civic art initiative that brings together poets and artists to create an annual series of illustrated poetry posters for Syracuse.
The meetups will complement the Project’s work in civic entrepreneurship by giving Central New Yorkers a new outlet for creative expression.
