About this Event
Join us for a seminar with Andrew Baldwin, Professor of Human Geography at Durham University, whose research explores the intersections of climate change, migration, race, political thought, and critical social theory. Andrew Baldwin will be visiting the University of Toronto from September 25 to October 23, 2026.
In this talk, Baldwin explores how climate mobility is reshaping contemporary understandings of humanity, difference, and political belonging. Drawing on the work of Denise Ferreira da Silva, he examines the racial ontology emerging within climate mobility discourse and asks how ideas of the human are being reconfigured in response to the planetary crisis.
Moving beyond conventional approaches to climate justice, the presentation considers climate mobility as a new domain of ethics and political economy through which novel forms of difference are being produced and understood. The talk will engage with the work of Sylvia Wynter, Michel Foucault, and Edward Said to explore how liberal humanism is adapting to climate change and its consequences.
A Q&A session will follow the presentation.
