The Chattanooga Bach Choir, David Long artistic director and conductor, opens its 42nd season presenting the great choral-orchestral masterworks by Bach and others with their Cantata series, featuring Bach’s Cantata BWV 47 on Sunday, September 27 at 5 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 663 Douglas Street in Chattanooga. For this opening concert of their 2026-27 season, the Bach Choir presents Cantata BWV 47 “Wer sich selbst erhöhet, der soll erniedriget werden” (“Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled”) composed in 1726 for the 17th Sunday after Trinity. Additional works on the program include: Jacob Handl’s motet “Media vita in morte sumus” (In the midst of life we are in death”) and Friedrich Zachow’s organ prelude “Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz” (“Why are you troubled, my heart?”). Featured artists for this performance are Janelle Wagoner, soprano; Matthew Hoch, bass; Sheri Peck, violin & concertmaster; Karla Fowkes, organ.
