Bob Tymczyszyn is a veteran newspaper photographer and photojournalist from St. Catharines, Ontario, whose career has been closely connected with the Niagara region and the visual history of its communities. For nearly four decades, Bob has worked in newspaper photography, documenting everything from breaking news and major community events to sports, politics, entertainment, human-interest stories and the everyday moments that define a community. He started out at the Mississauga News and Toronto Sun before a chance at the St. Catharines Standard, where he has spent much of his career. In addition, his work has also appeared in publications including the Hamilton Spectator and Toronto Star, Washington Post and Los Angeles Times as well as many other corporate and private assignments.
Over the years, Bob's photographs have covered an extraordinary range of subjects. His work has taken him from sporting events and political gatherings to fires, accidents, community celebrations, cultural events and countless assignments where the challenge was to tell an entire story with a single frame.
Bob's photographs have also become part of the historical record of Niagara. His work has been reproduced in books, archival publications and historical documents.
One of the defining characteristics of Bob's approach to photography is his ability to recognize the decisive moment. Newspaper photography rarely provides the opportunity to arrange a scene or wait for perfect conditions. The photographer must arrive, assess the situation and anticipate what is about to happen—often within seconds. That experience has helped Bob develop an instinct for finding the image that tells the story.
Beyond his professional career, Bob has remained active in the St. Catharines and Niagara community. He has been involved with Ukrainian community organizations and humanitarian initiatives, including efforts supporting humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
After decades behind the camera, Bob's career represents much more than a collection of assignments and newspaper photographs. His images form a visual record of Niagara—its people, its communities, its triumphs, its tragedies and the countless ordinary moments that might otherwise have been forgotten.
Nearly 40 years of newspaper photography have taught Bob that the best photograph isn't simply the one that looks good—it is the one that tells you something.
