About the event
This conversation will explore human potential, justice and transformation through the experiences of Brian Beals and Maria de Arteaga.
Beals was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1988 and spent 35 years in prison before being exonerated in December 2023, following years of advocacy by his family and the Illinois Innocence Project at UIS. His experiences offer a powerful perspective on resilience, hope and the possibility of transformation.
Beals and de Arteaga will share perspectives from their experiences with the criminal justice system and their work with incarcerated individuals, exploring how art, education, hope and advocacy can create opportunities for transformation, even in the most difficult circumstances.
Together, they will consider what meaningful systemic change looks like and what our institutions, including prisons, should offer when we believe in the possibility of human growth.
