About this Event
Facilitation, Psychology & Learning Through Sport
Develop your ability to coach people, facilitate learning and create experiences that matter, on and off the court.
You know your sport. But when a participant loses confidence, a team stops communicating or someone asks a question you cannot answer, technical knowledge only takes you so far.
How do you help them reflect, find their own solutions and grow?
Coaching Beyond the Game is a practical, four-hour pilot programme for sports coaches and facilitators who want to develop people through sport. Drawing on coaching principles, psychology and experiential learning, it gives you approaches to use in your next coaching session, camp or workshop.
Invest in the person behind the coach
78% of coaches report that coach education improved coaching effectiveness. Your impact goes beyond the drills you run. It also comes from how you listen, respond and turn an experience into a learning opportunity.
This course will help you:
- Recognise when to teach, manage, coach, facilitate or partner, and set psychological safety.
- Make teachable moments count: lead short debriefs that help athletes reflect, work out what to change and test it in the next attempt.
- Listen and adapt: understand the participant’s perspective, ask useful questions and adjust your coaching to different people.
- Bring the group into the conversation: invite quieter voices, explore different views and help participants learn from one another.
- Develop people through your sport: adapt familiar drills and games to shape values and practise soft skills.
- Redesign an activity from your own sport to support learning in these aspects.
What we’ll cover
- The role of the coach
Explore the differences between a manager, coach, facilitator, partner and teacher. Practise contracting to agree on the learning, and recognise that effective coaching does not require having every answer. - Learning through experience
Use Kolb’s learning cycle to identify teachable moments and facilitate mini-debriefs that connect experience, reflection, learning and experimentation. - Listening and individual conversations
Practise listening with the intention to understand rather than reply. Explore different levels of listening, participants’ perspectives and motivation through scenario-based conversations. - Facilitating a group
Invite participants to respond and learn from one another. Explore Tuckman’s group development model and practise setting expectations for psychological safety, inviting participation and responding productively. - Designing better sporting experiences
Use LyfeGo’s seven activity-design dials to adapt activities within your own sport, making deliberate changes to support engagement and learning. - Expect to practise
This is a participatory workshop. You’ll work through one-to-one coaching scenarios, group facilitation exercises and activity-design challenges. Bring a situation from your own coaching or facilitation experience. Use it to explore what you could do differently in your next session.
