6 Week Ceramic Afterschool Class

Get your hands dirty and get creative with clay!
Join MakerSpace NYC for a six-week afterschool ceramics program designed especially for young makers ages 7–12. Students will explore the fundamentals of ceramics through a combination of wheel throwing and hand-building, learning how to turn clay into functional, sculptural, and totally unique creations.
With professional instruction, hands-on demonstrations, and plenty of time to experiment, students will build confidence in the ceramics studio while developing their own creative ideas.
No previous ceramics experience is required.

PRICING:
12-class session: $600
Commit to the full 6-week, 12-class session and pay $50 per class.
This ticket reserves a student's place for the entire 6-week, 12-class session.
Drop-In: $70 per class
Can't commit to the 12-class full session? Drop-in registration is available for $70 per class, subject to availability.
All materials are included in the ticket price.
There is no separate materials fee.
WHAT TO BRING:
Students should wear:
- Comfortable clothes that can get messy
- Closed-toe shoes
- Clothes appropriate for working with clay and glaze
- Please bring a water bottle if desired.
All necessary ceramics materials and studio equipment are provided.
Important Information for Parents & Guardians
This is an in-person, hands-on ceramics program for children ages 7–12.
Please make sure all emergency contact and authorized pickup information is accurate when registering.
WHAT WE'LL EXPLORE:
Throughout the program, students will learn:
- Basic ceramics techniques and studio practices
- Hand-building with pinch, coil, and slab methods
- Introduction to wheel throwing
- Centering and shaping clay on the wheel
- Building and refining forms
- Texture and surface decoration
- Underglazing and glazing
- Basic ceramics vocabulary and studio etiquette
- How clay is dried and fired
- Creative problem-solving through hands-on making
Students will create multiple pieces during the session and have the opportunity to take home finished work after firing.
A Creative & Supportive Studio
This class is about exploration, experimentation, and having fun with clay.
Students will receive individualized guidance while being encouraged to develop their own ideas and artistic voices. Some pieces may work exactly as planned, while others may surprise us - that's part of the ceramics process!
Our goal is for students to leave with new skills, greater confidence, and a collection of things they made themselves.
MATERIALS:
All standard class materials are included.
Students will have access to clay, studio tools, underglazes, and glazes needed for class projects.
Please note that ceramics is a process-based medium. While we take great care with students' work, pieces can occasionally crack or break during drying or firing.
INSTRUCTORS:
Matty
Matty is a sculptor and ceramicist originally from Boston. He received a Bachelor's degree in Studio Art with a concentration in sculpture from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he also started the university's only ceramics program.
With 10 years of ceramics experience, Matty has worked for multiple ceramics studios throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut. He has also worked as a fabricator and studio assistant for multiple artists and on large community-based public art projects.
Matty has been working at MakerSpace NYC since fall 2025, when he designed and built the ceramics studio, which he now runs and operates.
Assata
Assata is a MakerSpace NYC educator who works with students through the organization's hands-on, project-based youth programming. MakerSpace NYC's school programs emphasize creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and learning through making.
ABOUT THE CERAMICS STUDIO:
Classes take place in MakerSpace NYC's ceramics studio at Brooklyn Army Terminal. The studio includes pottery wheels, hand-building tables, a kiln, clay extruders, community tools, and a variety of clays, underglazes, and glazes.

REFUND POLICY:
We reserve the right to cancel the class if we do not have the minimum amount of students. If we cancel, we will refund you and notify you. You may cancel and get a refund up to seven days before the class. After that, refunds are contingent on us being able to fill your seat. Under no circumstances do we offer refunds to individuals who cancel on the same day. Please note, Eventbrite fees are non-refundable if you cancel.
