Do the things we spend our lives chasing actually give us lasting happiness? We all want to be happy and avoid suffering. Yet even when life appears to be going well, fulfilment can still be temporary or elusive. Could a deeper understanding of the mind help us to pursue happiness more wisely, and also contribute to the wellbeing of others?
Buddhist Mind Science: Transforming the Mind to Cultivate Lasting Happiness explores these questions through Buddhist wisdom, meditation and contemporary scientific knowledge of the mind. You do not need to be Buddhist, and no prior experience is assumed. The course will be taught in English by Sandy Edwards, in-person at Buddha House, Adelaide.
Across six engaging sessions, this second module in the series covers:
• What meditation is
• How to calm the mind and refine attention with the breath
• How to cultivate a healthy emotional life
• Enhancing wholesome emotions and mental states as first foundations for cultivating lasting happiness
• How each of these relate to current scientific understanding on attention training, wellbeing, empathy, and emotions
Rather than simply discussing happiness as an abstract idea, the course offers opportunities to explore it experientially through meditation, practical exercises, readings, reflection and group discussion.
