Alan Wenger is Professor of Trumpet and Chair of the Division of Music at the University of Central Missouri, where he has been a member of the faculty since 2003. He received his education at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, Boston University, and the University of North Texas. In 2014 he was the recipient of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Outstanding Alumnus Award in Music from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His performance career has been both extensive and diverse. For six years, he served as Principal Solo Cornet of the internationally acclaimed and award-winning Fountain City Brass Band in Kansas City, and performed with them as both member and soloist in numerous concerts across the United States and in the U.K. He has been a frequent sub with the Kansas City Symphony, has toured as a chamber musician with the Empire Brass and Bluebonnet Brass, and has performed on natural trumpet throughout the United States and Europe. Jazz and commercial experiences include performances with the Four Tops, Manheim Steamroller, Lou Rawls, the Temptations, Tommy Tune and the Manhattan Rhythm Kings, the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, and with the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra and Rock Orchestra Kansas City, with whom he presently plays lead trumpet. He has a keen interest in contemporary music and has been a featured performer at the College Music Society National Convention, Electronic Music Midwest, and as soloist in the premiere performance of Randall Snyder’s Six Tableaux for Trumpet and Orchestra with Orchestra Omaha. As an educator, he has presented numerous clinics in public schools and at the Missouri Music Educators Conference. He is a member of the International Trumpet Guild, appearing as a performer, clinician, or adjudicator at ten different conferences in five countries, as well as being a contributor to the Book Reviews and Recording Reviews columns of the ITG Journal. Dr. Wenger’s arrangements of music for trumpet ensemble are published by Carl Fischer.
Mia Kim made her professional debut with the Indianapolis Symphony at the age of twelve. A winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Auditions, Kim has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, most recently at Weill Recital Hall (Carnegie Hall, NYC). Other concert performances have included NPR’s “Performance Today”, the Chautauqua Music Festival, the Rocky Ridge Music Festival (Estes Park, Colorado), the Library of Congress Coolidge Recital Series (Washington, D.C.), the Dag Hammerskjold Library at the United Nations, Steinway Hall (New York), the Summerfest Chamber Music Festival (Kansas City), and Missouri River Festival of the Arts (Boonville). International concert and teaching travels have taken her to Thessaloniki, Greece and Granada, Spain.
Dr. Kim received her doctoral degree from the Eastman School of Music where she studied with (and served as teaching assistant to) Nelita True. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Indiana University where she was a student of Menahem Pressler. Deeply devoted to supporting the musical culture of her community, Dr. Kim served as the director of the Warrensburg Area Youth Symphony, is a former state president of the Missouri Federation of Music Clubs, and is the founder and current president of the Warrensburg Friends of Music. She currently serves as Professor of Piano, Director of the UCM Community Music Program, and Director of the UCM Summer Arts Camps at the University of Central Missouri.
Mimi Wenger is a freelance flute performer and instructor in the KC metro. She is principal flute in the Lees Summit Symphony, flute and piccolo player with the Rock Orchestra Kansas City, and a member of the Tre Venti Woodwind Trio. She holds degrees in Music Education and Flute Performance from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln and did post-graduate studies at the University of North Texas. A dedicated teacher, her high school flute students have consistently occupied the top flute and piccolo chairs in the Missouri All-State Band and Orchestra, and many have pursued music degrees after graduation. She has also served as instructor of flute at Amarillo College and the University of Central Missouri. When not playing or teaching the flute, Mimi is an avid gardener and enjoys spending time with her daughters, horses, cats, and dog.
