BRITTEN - Saint Nicolas and other Saints

ERCU marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Benjamin Britten, one of Britain’s greatest creative artists, with a selection of his choral works, including his joyous cantata, Saint Nicolas, some of the brightest, boldest and most colourful music that he ever wrote, in a story of prison breaks, pickled boys and adventures at sea.
The patron saint of music, St Cecilia, also features in our concert, in a setting by Herbert Howells of a poem by Ursula Vaughan Williams.
We go back to the 18th century for Joseph Haydn’s Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo, known as the Little Organ Mass as it features an extensive organ solo. During Haydn’s lifetime, this was among his most popular works.
